As I walked onto the grounds of Howard University, goosebumps rose on my arms.
The air buzzed with a sense of history, of resilience, a feeling that something profound was about to unfold.
I came to hear Vice President Kamala Harris’ concession speech, but I left with something so much greater: the unwavering persistence of hope.
I knew that this day was one of those historic moments. Not just in Howard's history, but in the United States as well.
The campus felt alive with its sacred energy. Every familiar landmark—Founder's Library, Frederick Douglass Hall, the American flag, and the Yard itself—stood as reminders of what has been overcome and the power of possibility.
The campaign bus with its slogan “A New Way Forward” carried a promise of change yet to come, echoed in every voice and hopeful gaze in the crowd.
Walking through this campus is like walking through my neighborhood because it’s home to me, representing my community and my Bison family.
As a Howard alumna, I have countless memories tied to the Yard:
Joining my legacy family for Homecoming celebrations
Walking through campus with my tour group during welcome week
Celebrating our graduation together years later
Honoring Chadwick Boseman’s legacy alongside his family and Phylicia Rashad on his first Remembrance Day
These are just a few of the memories I’ll hold in my heart forever. But today’s visit to the Mecca held a different kind of significance.
You could feel the weight of this moment in the air.
Signs of celebration for Vice President Harris were all around me: bleachers decorated with American regalia, screens poised to capture her speech, and a giant American flag billowing gently in the air.
This moment was not what we expected. But it was not breaking us. We stood tall, shoulders back, hearts lifted.
The bright sun and soulful music blended into a persistent energy of determination. Every sight, every sound was a reminder that we shall overcome.
In the words of Howard University, we will continue uplifting each other through "excellence and service."
Hope was undeniable.
There was emotion, but there was also unwavering resolve. You could see it in the people around me: hope shined in their eyes, purpose carried in their strides, and every warm embrace offering silent reassurance.
I saw the future of America in these people.
Everyone from different backgrounds, ages, races, places, even different countries, coming together to lift each other up. A circle of AKA sorority sisters joined together in song. Passing by different people, I heard stories of resilience and belief in tomorrow.
There was decency, patience, kindness, and optimism in the air.
We carried ourselves through this moment with courage. It’s not the end. It’s just the beginning. No one was afraid.
United, we stood together, ready to keep fighting for the promise of tomorrow.
I did my best to soak up every second of this experience.
I paused quietly, letting the sun hit my face, standing there among the people and listening to the music of resilience shared across generations.
When Vice President Harris took the stage, we showered her with love.
She spoke with grace, courage, and the same passionate energy that filled the crowd.
“The light of America’s promise will always burn bright, as long as we never give up, and as long as we keep fighting.” —Vice President Kamala Harris
As she spoke, the sunset painted the sky in brilliant colors. The light from Douglass Hall bathed everything it touched in a vibrant glow. This was our call to hope.
It feels only right to carry this energy forward.
I hold this passion in my heart. I strive to do my best to lift people’s spirits, join more hands, and to move forward together, living each day with positivity.
Bathe in the light of this hope.
Hold these words from our vice president close to your heart, and keep your eyes trained on the future.
Having looked through the window of possibility, it is easier to open the door and enter that new day together.
